After everyone was seated, the crone took the seat to the north and took a moment to collect herself, breathing deeply several times without regard for the men or how they may be waiting. She laid the chanting book in front of her, facing the inner circle, and took a moment to look each man squarely in the face.
"If you did bring rope," the crone said to Evan, "I'll let you decide if you think it necessary to tie your men up. And, if you would like, I can also tie you to your stake. The drink in the mug will help to prevent the goddess from sinking deeply into your mind, if you choose to drink it, so you should be able to handle yourselves, but I wanted to provide the option."
Xavier picked up his mug and smelled the contents. He caught whiffs of frankincense, saltpeter, and anise, but he didn't know where the silver color came from. As those ingredients matched with what he knew of potion making from his grandmother, Xavier was prepared to drink it, even though he didn't feel it was especially necessary. It smelled and reminded him of home and gave him the right amount of distraction to not worry terribly much about the rope part, though he was desperately curious what Evan would want.
Seth looked incredibly uncomfortable. He could not sit straight on the cushion, and it looked like keeping a neutral facial expression was difficult for him.
"I'll drink if you drink, Captain," Seth said, "but I'd really rather not be tied up. I'm really starting to doubt if this is a good idea."
Part 1 (Start Reading Here)
Re: Part 1
Truth told, Evan wished the crone had waited a bit to mention the rope. The way that Seth expressed doubt was precisely why. The captain shot his solder a disapproving glare, but keep it brief. Seth voicing his doubt out loud at this point was certainly some kind of infraction as far as Evan was concerned, but not a major one.
"I want to hear more about how this is going to go, first." Evan said, drawing his gaze back to the crone.
"We drink - or not - and tie each other up - or not - and then what?"

Re: Part 1
The crone allowed herself a smile. The discomfort in the men was plain in their faces, except maybe the one to the east, but that felt appropriate given the gravity of the situation they were about to enter into.
“Once everything is set, I will begin the incantation. This will open a portal into where the goddess lives. She will be bound to the inner circle, and when she arrives, she may be angry, but there is a way to say her name that will calm and please her. I will hold space for her anger. Once she has calmed enough to talk, you should attempt to speak with her. Determine what it is you want, ask her your questions, and if you can, persuade her to stop these attacks. Make sure to mention that you stand against the king. That will get her attention.
“She may attempt to persuade you and your men to cross into her circle. If any of you do, we could all be compromised. I cannot guarantee your safety if that happens.” The crone continued to stare at Evan as though she were looking past his eyes, into his skull.

Re: Part 1
Evan listened quietly, more or less managing a poker face for the duration of the crone's explanation. His brain - well, and body - were doing a million different things, though. This was crazy; this was exhilarating; this was terrifying; this was hot as fuck; this was what needed to be done. He gripped hard onto that last sentiment, the fingers of his hand on his leg digging in as though they were helping him hold on.
He lowered his eyes to his mug when the crone finished speaking, contemplating what would be the right call here. He didn't want to completely disregard Seth's stated preference, but that couldn't completely make the decision for him, either. The crone had said the drinks would help, but he wondered if she knew just how much danger he was actually in, and whether, if she did, she'd still predict the drink would be enough. A part of him wanted to offer to just have the crone tie him and allow his men to remain free if they felt confident, as that seemed fairest to them, but he had appearances to consider as well; the only restrained person being the primary negotiator would seem a bit absurd, no? Of course, for appearance's sake, it seemed better for none of them to be tied up, but by gods if they fucked this up for appearance's sake...
Nnng, appearances weren't nothing, though. They were here to attempt to gain an ally, which meant offering allyship, and broadcasting 'I have so little trust in our capabilities I agreed to undergo this humiliation' seemed like a less than ideal situation. At the end of the day, maybe it was a risk he just had to take.
"I'll trust in my men's willpower." The captain finally said, and shifted his eyes back up to meet the crone's gaze again as he raised his mug as if to toast. "And in your preparations."

Re: Part 1
Seth let out a small sigh of relief, and Xavier raised an eyebrow at him from his seat across the way. Xavier's skepticism was quickly overridden by the anxious thumping of his heart. If nothing else, this was the most exciting thing he had done since joining the army. He looked at Evan with an expression of immense gratitude for a brief moment, grateful to be part of all this, to be trusted this much.
The crone, starting with Xavier, looked deeply at each of the men, hoping to impart both to the men and herself some confidence in what they were about to do. When she had finished, she said, "Now drink deeply of the brew in front of you. May it bring you clarity of mind and peace in the presence of the goddess." Xavier did not have to be told twice. He downed it greedily, hardly noticing the bitter taste as it washed down his throat and reminded him of home. Seth watched and waited until Evan started drinking the contents before beginning himself, his face clearly depicting how awful the taste was.
Once the mugs were empty, the crone began the incantation. It didn't sound like much of anything to Seth, but Xavier picked up on a few of the words his grandmother used from what she called the language of the gods, which sent shivers down Xavier's spine. This was really happening.
The first part of the incantation finished, the crone said in the common tongue, "Let us remember that it is lightning that sparks wildfires." At that moment, a streak of lightning from the oddly darkened--for the time of day--sky above them hit precisely behind the crone at the very northern tip of where the outer circle joined itself. From this point in both directions, lavender fire crackling with electricity erupted until the entire outer circle was aflame. The crone did not miss a beat, obviously prepared for and expecting this, and continued with the second part of the incantation in the gods' language. Xavier looked at the flames around them with awe but was not afraid. He thought he had recognized the stuff. He nodded to himself and kept trying to pick out words he knew from the language. Seth visibly flinched at the lightning strike, and his eyes widened considerably, dilated almost to the point that no iris was left to encircle his pupils.
In the common tongue, the crone said, "Let these worlds, the one of mist and the one of earth, be joined at this center." With the last syllable, a brilliant red orb about three inches in diameter appeared in the center of the inner circle, floating three feet above the ground. Xavier had not expected or ever even heard of this, but he watched with interest as the orb stretched and became two-dimensional, widening in an oval until it touched the ground and was about six feet tall. The portal now obstructed the crone's view of Evan; though, if she looked hard enough at the semi-translucent, opalescent red, she could see through it. The crone continued with the third part of the incantation in the gods' language. At the end, the crone began to chant in such a way that her voice reverberated around the meadow, and the whole sky grew nearly black.
"De...Dehal....Dehaljadrun." She said this over and over, bowing as she did so, each round of the goddess' name lasting about 10 seconds with a five-second pause before another round of the name chant began again. The portal turned lavender and erupted around its edges with the same fire as still engulfed the outer edge of the circle.
--
When the circle of purple flames erupted around her, Dehaljadrun smirked. It was rare that someone had the audacity to summon her. In fact, it had only happened twice since the Asphodel temples had been destroyed, both times by the same priestess. She assumed it was the same woman now, though part of her hoped some new person would meet her on the other side, someone less thorough in their preparations. But, to the old coot’s credit, she did always bring sufficient offerings.
As she waited for the portal to open in the center, she tossed her long, black hair over her shoulders, exposing her breasts, which protruded from her chest in two perfect spheres. She’d had a lot of time to perfect them over the years. Her skin, a lighter color than the lavender flames but definitely with a purple tint, nearly glowed in her anticipation. This time, surely, she could get what she wanted. No more random attacks.
The portal touched the ground and turned from red to purple, and Dehaljadrun’s smirk grew wider as she waited, waited, waited, hearing the sounds of her name coming through the opening, listening as the syllables of it sent electricity through her body from head to toe and back again, over and over until she was full of her own pleasure as it begged for release, eyes bright, skin itself nearly ablaze.
Barefoot, wearing only a short black wrap skirt around her body, she stepped through the portal, which was only barely tall enough for her to enter with a straight back.
--
Once the goddess was through the portal, it returned to its red color and spherical shape and retreated upwards about 20 feet in the air above the inner circle. The crackling, electric fire on the edges grew loud as the crone stopped chanting the goddess’ name and sat up, looking her straight in her darkly purple eyes. The crone waited for the goddess to speak.
“You again.”
Dehaljadrun walked forward toward the crone with obvious disappointment. She crouched down and examined the inner circle with disdain before standing up again and turning from the crone to walk the edge of the circle, facing Seth first. She laughed, a metallic, glittering sort of laugh, when she saw him, rapt and already at the edge of his cushion, his balled fist glinting with something metallic as it dug into his palm. Dehaljadrun brought her right hand up underneath her collar bone and slowly drug it down around the curve of her left breast as if doing so absentmindedly, but her narrowed eyes and smirk said otherwise.
“Having some trouble, are we, my pet?” she asked Seth but did not wait for an answer as she continued around the circle. When she caught sight of Evan, her eyes widened considerably and her hand stopped moving. The sound of the fire died down slightly, and the light faded away a little. Dehaljadrun got to the very edge of the inner circle and kneeled in front of him with her knees splayed and open, leaning in over the edge of the circle but being very careful that her legs did not touch the line.
“And you, you just can’t get enough of me, can you?” It was very clearly the velvet voice Evan had heard through the men’s bodies. Dehaljadrun sent a flash of images to Evan’s mind from the past two days, of the initial bite and kiss, of Seth convulsing over his body, of the dream version of Xavier with purple eyes.
At the eastern part of the circle, Xavier rolled his real eyes but otherwise remained at attention.

From the training grounds, Elaine looked up at the sky. Over the forest, some intensely dark clouds were rolling in, and the wind was picking up.
“That’s all for today, men!” she yelled so they could all hear her. “Go and secure the tents!”
((OOC: When the images flash through Evan’s mind, they are not as clear as they would have been if he hadn’t drunk the potion. He could easily convince himself that his own mind conjured up the images if he so desires.))

Re: Part 1
Evan caught Xavier’s grateful expression out of the corner of his eye, and let his lips curl up just a bit, mostly just on the side of his face that Xavier could see. He was glad to have the boy by his side here.
He gave the crone a respectful nod when she met his gaze again. He was putting a lot of trust in her here, and he appreciated the seriousness with which she was taking it. When it came time to drink, he downed the liquid smoothly. It tasted about as shitty as he expected it to taste, and that just seemed like the way it ought to be.
He watched silently while the crone started her incantation. His fingers still dug tensely into his thigh, but other than that he appeared mostly relaxed, and waiting patiently to watch how this unfolded. The lightning strike was certainly a surprise, and the captain sat up straighter than he had been, a brief scared and excited chill running up his spine. He fairly instinctively turned his head to follow the flames as they made their way around the circle and met behind him, enclosing them here in this clearing. Some small part of him panicked at this visceral inkling of being trapped, but it was a feeling he was well practiced at riding out.
His gaze returned to the crone, and then to the red orb in between them. He still couldn’t fucking believe how fast he’d dived from Yeah okay maybe the king has some supernatural tricks up his sleeve to All right, let’s go summon a fucking god. Some parts of his brain still wanted to disbelieve what he was seeing, but Evan was too determined never to distrust his senses. A nervousness and excitement nearly vibrated in his body, anticipation building steadily as the orb changed and morphed before him, and the priestess chanted the goddess’ name. He swallowed deeply and gripped his leg tighter when the figure of a woman emerged.
Truth told, he was a little surprised by how calmly she addressed the crone and inspected her surroundings. The way the old woman had talked, Evan had been braced for quite a bit of rage to appear with the goddess, but she mostly just seemed disappointed. The captain wasn’t entirely sure that disappointed was better than angry, in this context.
He shifted his gaze to Seth as the goddess set her attention upon the soldier, trying to gage how he was holding up. The laugh was a bit unnerving, but Seth seemed to be holding together well enough. Even so, they were just getting started, and Seth certainly wasn't unaffected. Evan grit his teeth, hoping he’d made the right call about the rope.
His eyes returned to the goddess as she started moving on, and Evan did his best to keep his expression neutral. He sat up straight again as the goddess knelt, and his eyes allowed themselves to -- well, only get about as far as between her breasts before he forced them back up. The pull to gaze between her open legs was strong, but giving in to that seemed perhaps unwise at this particular moment. His mouth curled a bit into a subtle smirk when she spoke to him, but it faded and his lips parted slightly as those images went and stuck themselves in his mind.
Honestly the most flustering was Xavier’s purple eyes, as it served as a play to let Evan know that his dreams weren’t private. Then again, perhaps he’d simply conjured the image himself - he certainly wouldn’t put it past his brain to pull that shit - but he wasn’t so sure. She was also called the Queen of Dreams, after all. Ughhhh, that opened a lot of uncomfortable doors.
“I told you that you and I have a problem.” He said a bit sharply, truthfully partly just because he was cutting himself off from the train of thought he’d very nearly gone down, and somewhat jarringly pulled himself back to the situation in front of him. “You’re taking my men out of commission, and we need all hands on deck if we’re going to take down the king.”
He figured he’d leave it there, his eyes pointedly staring into the goddess’ as he awaited her reply.

Re: Part 1
At the mention of the king, the flames flared back to their original height. The goddess sat back up and closed her legs, fully inside the circle again.
"You think you and your puny army are going to take down the king? I don't know if you realize, but you are severely outnumbered. Plus, I gave you back that one, didn't I?" She tossed her head briefly over to Seth, whose whole body was shivering at this point. When Dehaljadrun looked at him, his eyes closed, and a wave passed over his body. She looked back at Evan and smiled. "I mean, mostly."
Though she had no intention of cutting this conversation short, she was curious about the third man, and upon seeing his face, she nearly choked with delight. Oh, they were making this easy.

Re: Part 1
Anger narrowed Evan's eyes and clenched his jaw. He hated feeling underestimated, and he also felt intensely uncomfortable with how the goddess was regarding his soldier, and the effect she was having on him. The captain stopped himself from reacting beyond that, though, as anger didn't seem useful in the conversation at hand, at least not yet.
"Our commander is seeking an alliance with the Shel'ti as we speak." Evan replied, his voice mostly just matter-of-fact, thanks to the effort he was putting in. "Although as I understand it, you've been cutting into their ranks as well. Is it your intention to make things easier for the king?"

Re: Part 1
The purple flames behind them grew to nearly twice the height that they had been when the lightning struck, and Dehaljadrun glared at Evan furiously.
"The king will die. I will treat him to a death that no one will be able to forget, burned into their minds and songs for eternities, but I do not trust mortal men to kill he who has betrayed even the immortals, and I will do anything I must to get to him, even and especially 'cutting into your ranks.' "

Re: Part 1
Evan... smiled. It wasn't even mocking or smug; it was almost a smile of genuine relief. Oh, his body had several other responses - his fingers still dug into his leg, and his shoulders certainly tensed at the sight of the flames bolstering in his periphery, for instance - but his lips simply curled, pleased by the goddess' words.
"Good to hear. The old woman said you'd like revenge on the king, but it's nice to have confirmation. I respect you taking your vengeance into your own hands, but you're looking for something. Perhaps we can help you find it."
