Plotting and Planning

Yay! Welcome to the board!

Hopefully it's pretty self-explanatory, but Emily has also made some detailed notes on the main page of the forum.

To sum up some of our discussions so far, here's what we know:
  • XJ and Anya want to be main characters
  • They are in some crazy asteroid mining prison camp
  • The government in this world is not wholly good but not wholly evil either, probably corporate in some way
  • Aliens exist, so this is probably an interplanetary government
  • Money is handled via microchip (or something similar)
I was also thinking that we may need a couple characters to be guards. Would Reaper be interested? I think a few of my characters might be.

I'm excited! Feel free to post brainstormy thoughts in response if desired.

Hooray! I'm so excited for this!

I'm thinking that there are probably multiple governments or nations that control various systems, with star systems within any one government functioning like states within the US, but boundaries between nations are probably more fluid given the layout of space. One could perhaps seek asylum if they could leave their government's territory (not that XJ and Anya would necessarily seek that). I would think that XJ and Anya are native to whatever systems are governed by this corporatocracy; though possibly different solar systems therein (but maybe not). We might only deal with that one nation. We might want to name it too.

I liked your idea of an embeded microchip that has everything about the person in it, including money balances, etc. I would think that this would function across nations. I would also think it would be tied to one's biology to avoid the "get the chip removed and put in a different person's to avoid security" trope. They'd probably sequence a person's DNA and if the chip was ever removed and the person caught, they'd just rechip them using the DNA records; kinda like a Sim card and a phone number.

Thinking on this mining camp, I think I am picturing an old, somewhat rickety, grimy, and outdated space station in an asteroid belt. Centripital force creates gravity-like conditions everywhere except the central column. Drones bring in potential mining targets. Smaller pieces are brought into the station to be processed by inmates indoors. Any larger pieces that the drones can't handle for whatever reason get hauled nearby and inmates have to suit up and go out on a space walk. They try to avoid sending inmates out, and security is tight on these, but inmates get some kind of hazard bonus for doing it when it's available to incentivize volunteers. Maybe a day off, or special meal or recreation privileges? We might want to decide who (corporate and which, or government) owns the mining platform that we're prisoners on, and what they are mining for (profit, military construction, etc).

I think I'd like to address the problem of the language barrier too. With interplanetary travel and beings from multiple worlds; is there a universal translator, maybe built into the chip, or a different chip by the ears? Does it work flawlessly like in Star Trek or is it slow like today's Google Translate? Does everyone just kind of speak some new interplanetary language, translated into English for this forum's sake?

Reaper wouldn't be an outright guard, but he is usually a mercenary, and so if hiring on this station were rough, he might take the job temporarily for the right price. Usually he'd be more interested in taking something like a prison down, but he'll take most jobs for the right price. That could create some interesting internal dynamics if the owners are so desperate to hire that they're getting mercs to do prison guard duty. Alternately, there are at least a couple characters in me that would totally be generic guards...but I have not unearthed them yet. We could maybe figure something out in that regard.

Finally, I'm curious how long Anya and XJ have been there as a foundation for starting the scene, and maybe whether either of them are familiar with each others' home planets. I think Anya is fairly resilient, but I don't think it is interesting for her to be broken or dejected by having been stuck in a brutal labor prison for a super long time. I'm excited to explore her mischievous, feisty spark and free spirit under prison scrutiny.

Hooray world building! I love it. I also like the idea of leaving empty spaces to fill in as we go, but I think these will create a good starting point :D

I like the idea of Anya and XJ coming from the same planet/solar system/government. Maybe everyone from the prison is from the same solar system at least; that would make sense. As far as names, do you want to come up with a few and I'll come up with a few and then we can vote or something?

Suggested names for the nation (just making things up really):
  • Unitas Central
  • Sumatra (lol, apparently a type of chicken)
  • Nostaloma
I dig your expansion about the ideas of the microchip. Thank you for that. Sounds fun and complicated. It will definitely make escaping difficult! (But not impossible, Kai says.)

I like the idea of space walk opportunities and incentives to make inmates go out there. I think it makes sense that there are larger pieces of asteroid that are difficult for drones to mine, but why would they need human labor the rest of the time? I'm hoping that it's not just a way to waste their time. Maybe most of them they are piloting the drones or something. Although we all really enjoy the idea of physical labor being a part of this.

I think I like the idea of it being a private prison, like possible one that the greater government doesn't even know about? Which could complicate how people get tried and picked up. Or maybe it's unregulated and the government is sort of turning a blind eye about it. Like you mentioned, I don't think we have to have this all hammered out, but it will be useful to have some general direction about where the characters will be headed and under what circumstances.

I think a universal language translator makes sense, but maybe there are some languages that haven't yet been downloaded to the program? Or maybe some of the inmates have outdated software. That could be interesting. I like the idea of most of the prisoners being able to communicate, though. Or we could make it a plot point for the prisoners to have to figure out how to steal translation software. Would be like a Tower of Babel thing. I dig.

I think we could work with the prison having really minimal staff. Like, it could probably be monitored virtually for the most part and maybe they also keep track of quotas digitally. That would help to keep the character count lower. But I also have some people who would be comfortable being guards.

My favorite option would be that Anya has been in the prison for many two weeks to a month and XJ is a newcomer who becomes her cellmate? That reminds me... Is Anya "human"? Does she have cat/hyena ears? I think XJ could be alien or human, but I think I have a slight preference for her having mostly human traits. Maybe she has some subtle cybernetic enhancements or something. Kai is definitely an alien, though its possibly that her telepathy powers are being subdued somehow.

Hopefully that helps with thoughts! I think we are maybe one or two more plotting posts away from starting a first scene! I imagine that XJ coming into the prison cell could be the first scene and they could get to know each other.

Oh, I really like Nostaloma. They could be Nostalomans. Here's some extra ideas in case more is better: Kriegenstein (Kriegens), The Conglomerate for Prosperity ("Gloms?"), Tiamel (Tiamelens). For the Conglomerate, I'm not really sure what folks from there would call themselves, or be called by others...probably some cultural thing, like how most of the world calls folks from the U.S. "Yankees," or "Americans," neither of which totally makes sense. I'm happy with Nostaloma if you are ^.^

I think I was imagining that the drones aren't all that precise. They'd likely have laser beams that could damage whatever is being mined, so the cheaper option is to have physical labor. I'm sure that there are robots and drones that could do the job, but they might just be more expensive than the basic food and rec needs of prisoners. I think it would be more expensive to have a work force, but for prison laborers it's almost free: all you need is space and food. The drones would probably be fairly dangerous too, so I don't know that they would let prisoners pilot them. This does raise an interesting question, though. What does the general populace do? Automation probably took over most of the labor needs from corporations, so for 'free' citizens, how do they 'make a living?' Are we talking UBI? Maybe it's a poverty level UBI and people are getting fed up with their lack of power and representation.

On the chip, eventually we might need to think about how the black market functions. Since all transactions with the chip are not only traceable; but for folks with warrants, escaped prisoners, etc they're not going to be able to use their funds without getting the authorities tipped off to their whereabouts. The black market would probably, then, be a barter system; or at least some alternative economy entirely. Or maybe they just have hacked terminals that can take your funds without being traced, but with markup. After all, governments are intentionally complicit in black markets--black markets are necessary for almost all economies to survive. We might not need to answer this question for now, unless there's a black market presence on the prison.

Interesting idea on the private prison outside government control. That makes me think that this is some sort of system where corporations can repossess not only your property, but your body as well. If folks don't pay their loans, or what have you, then they can be "repo'd" and forced into whatever the corporation wants. Spiraling out from there, the corporations could be running with that concept and imprisoning folks who don't even actually have loans, but also any corporate enemies that they can quietly capture. They report to the government that they have assessed some large loan amount that the prisoner owes, but behind the books it's "payment for damages." This means that a corporation could assess an amount owed for whatever they feel like for whatever perceived "damages" they like. Perhaps this high security prison is such an operation, specifically for folks who the corporation deemed to be enemies and assessed "payment for damages" for all the folks here. Corporate enemies, spies, activists, or even competitors just disappear from social society when their "collection agents" "repo" them. So they may have to report to the government that they've 'repossessed' someone, but they probably don't have to report specifically which prison they've gone to or anything like that unless the government requested that info for some investigation or another. There are probably laws about minimal treatment of prisoners, but being so unregulated the corporations might only follow those laws to whatever extent they like, and they can probably cook the books a lot too. That also makes me think that bounty hunting is a legitimized and booming business. The "collection agents" are just bounty hunters who track down these types of folks for corporations, and they'd have scanners that could read peoples' chips for identification and bounty claiming.

I could go either way on the translator. I think there are lots of interesting situations that could happen due to language barriers, and that might be an interesting place to start. Maybe we have outdated software, and a recent...acquisition...of a star system by our government has resulted in some prisoners who speak a language that our translators don't know. The guards know that the old prisoners can't converse with the new folks, and so they use that to their advantage because they know that we can't organize with them. If we want to include them in any uprising, we'll need to steal the update from a guard station. Maybe they're from a planet called our second favorite name from above, and our government acquired them through some kind of war; be it physical, economic, or some other form of tension with another nation.

I think minimal staff makes sense. I guess on guards, is it appropriate for me to use a character in fiction that I don't identify with or haven't really unearthed in myself? I could play some guards, but I don't know how authentic that character would be for now. Although, who knows, maybe this is how to unearth them. I can write a fictional character for sure, but I don't know if that's appropriate to the character centric intention of these stories.

I like the situation of Anya having been there for some time, and XJ joining her. I was certainly thinking of her as a sort of "beast-human." If that suits the setting, she would have some hyena characteristics; the ears and tail thing being part of that; although I do want to avoid going into anime-cat-girl territory at least somewhat. At least a hyena tail is not exactly cat like. nor are the ears. I think she has bare skin for the most part, which is a tan olive color; however she has spots of much darker skin on her shoulders and back, and her thick, curly hair is somewhat mane-like. I wonder if the planet we're from has two separate, sentient species from different world regions. They'd likely have to be from separate biomes or continents, but then were able to eventually coexist peacefully as they matured into a space-faring civilization. Perhaps one race is similar-to-us-humanoid and one race is beast-person with some variations, but they can't usually reproduce. Maybe Anya is one of the 'rare' half-beasts that biologists can aid in creating for two folks who want to have an inter-species child (and therefore why she isn't covered in fur). I don't think I want to do like a bigotry thing about it. I think in our planet's past there was bigotry around inter-species love and such, but that's long behind us. Half-beasts like Anya are probably rare in the way that redheads are rare on Earth. I also don't think that they are sterile like mules are, but I think that their sex cells only take after one or the other species. Does that fit into the setting you were thinking?

I think being from the same planet, either or both of XJ and Anya probably learned each others' languages, but then also have the translators... If anything with the translators happens, then we'll be able to still talk. Does that feel right? Maybe one species was a little more diplomatically dominant early on, and so today the more isolationist species would typically learn the other to fit in. Or maybe the two species truly coexisted and united, and it's simply a bilingual planet.

I'm really looking forward to starting :D

Nostaloma it is! I like the "Conglomerate for Prosperty" as the secondary planet/recently acquired star system, and calling them "Gloms" makes a lot of sense. I dig.

Definitely leaning toward the translator idea where they have to steal the update. That sounds like a lot of fun.

In terms of the black market, I think it could be barter-based inside the prison and maybe outside the prison there's a second chip implant that you can get? Maybe you can transfer funds over to it from a third party blockchain sort of system.

I like the idea of humans being the precision instruments. Lol. Maybe what they are mining is actually pretty small inside of the massive chunks of rock, so the drones blow them to manageable pieces and then humans need to mine the smaller metals or gems or whatever out of there.

Also, with regard to the government, I really like the idea that the government has recently acquired a new star system (maybe due to an economic collapse or something) but has stretched itself too thin to be useful, even though it has the best intentions. So on the outskirts, the black market, bounty hunters, and questionable corporate activities take place.

I like the idea of poverty level UBI with government position, etc, offering luxury-level salaries.

I dig the idea of Nostaloma having two coexisting species that can now intermingle. I think people probably learn one another's language or at least accustomed enough to it to have a basic understanding.

Well, I think we are ready! We can always return to this plotting thread if there are bigger things we need to flesh out, but maybe let's start and see what happens when XJ and Anya meet. :D

So, as we move the story forward, I think it's important for you (and Anya) to know that Kai (my alien tele/technopath) is a very high-profile political prisoner, and her captors are aware of her abilities. She's probably going to be very important to both the escape plan and the nitty-gritty details of how to hack both the translation chip and the prison watch system. I think it would be fun for her to be a Glom, but she would definitely know how to speak Nostaloman languages without help. She can probably help to translate in the meantime as well.

However, her telepath and technopath abilities are likely currently being limited by some kind of brainwave frequency device that XJ and Anya will have to find some way to remove to get her help. It's possible that Kai already has some ideas about how to do that but can't pull it off by herself.

Also, unrelatedly, I would love to have XJ get in trouble at some point and have to go to solitary confinement for a bit. Hearing about the psychedelic nature of those, I think it would be a pretty intense yet enjoyable scene to write at some point. Additionally, it's possible that Kai is constantly in solitary, but she would handle it a lot better and last a lot longer than XJ would.

One last thought: we could add Emily into this RP at some point if that sounds fun. Emily knows more about the mechanics of how that would work than I do, and the main thing would just be making sure that we agree on a posting frequency so that no one is holding anyone else up for too long in a way that disrupts overall interest/momentum. We could also come up with a totally new story idea for where we can add Emily if there's interest there and keep the prison break a you and me thing. (And hell, if Jess gets interested, that's also an option!) Mostly just things to think about as we get deeper in.

I'm excited! This is fun!

Super fun! I am very enjoying.

I am open to other characters and systems joining. Jess might become interested in posting, but my guess is that she would want to create a story intended for her from the start, especially since this, at least currently, is focused on Anya and XJ.

I'm sure Anya's mischievous nature will get her into trouble too. She's not one to be harmful, so wouldn't try and get XJ in trouble...but she also certainly isn't one to keep XJ from trouble either.

I like your ideas with Kai. Some questions as follow up:

Are Kai's abilities normal for Gloms?

What characteristics are common for Gloms? Mostly I am curious what they look like, I assume they're as diverse as any group of people. I think if Kai is one, Kai should take the wheel on that question.

Hmm...additional question about the station... Is this an all women's prison station? Cell block? What even is gender re: separating inmates.

My impression is that Gloms are more prone to special psychic abilities, but that it's still pretty rare for them, just slightly less rare than in humans. And of the people that Kai has met who have those abilities, hers seem to be more honed.

Kai has blue skin, is bald, and has silver eyes. They are going to go by "they" pronouns but only because the Gloms' native language uses "they," possibly for religious/mystic reasons (e.g., it's possible they simply believe that everyone is plural and this is widely accepted/expected). Kai and the Gloms in general are humanoid in form, but I suspect do not have genitalia the way humans do. I'm thinking that they have some control over whether they have an "in" or an "out," so to speak, but the default state is sleek and smooth in that area (gender neutral), though I think Kai presents as a very respectable slight femme presence. They have very little, if any, body hair, though I imagine that some Gloms do have short silver or blonde hair on their heads. Kai's maybe a fraction taller than the average human male, so Gloms are probably taller on average.

I don't have a lot of interest in having the prison separated by gender. I would hope that our futuristic society has decided to care less about it. Like, maybe there are some standards with the higher ups, but they might not translate in logical ways to the cellmates. Like, if the Gloms are all gender neutral by default, gender binaries start to break down. What are your thoughts?

I think I can visualize Gloms :)

I love the idea that society has left behind archaic ideas around gender and such. Even better, perhaps it never even occured to this society to divide people based on gender; or to have gender based social roles. That said, gender separation was originally founded on ideas around property ownership and power--ideas which then developed into today's capitalistic corporatism. Since this society ended up in a very similar space to our own today; it might follow that they have a similar history in regards to gender. So maybe it just became outdated. I think I like the idea that society at this point has abandoned the idea that gender is somehow institutionally meaningful; and simply that one's gender identity is only meaningful to individuals in the same way as one's values or personality traits are. I'd expect, then, that bathrooms, dorms, prisons, sports, competitions, etc are all unsegregated; and that the idea of doing such is absurdly archaic. The Gloms, then, would need no special considerations, either, in regards to gender or sex.

I do think that there would be different cell blocks for the purposes of organization and control within the prison station. Different cell blocks may have different levels of security, or even different day/night shifts. I agree that it's not interesting to do this division on the basis of gender, though :)
