At first, seeing Xavier's expression and hearing his response to the pinch, Evan was worried that his action hadn't landed in good fun. Had it been too sharp? Did Xavier not actually appreciate the spirit of it? But then the boy laughed, and oh gods that sound was sweet. Evan slowly drew his hand away from the boy's backside, reversing its trail over his thigh and his hip while Evan's other hand ran down and back up his own leg, and his hips subtly moved along with Xavier's motions, well aware of what the boy's body was doing even before his laughter subsided. He watched Xavier's face with affectionate fascination while their bodies moved in tandem, still separated by underwear but absolutely starting to pretty vividly imagine, what if they weren't?

But then Xavier said 'wait', and Evan's hips stopped moving save for his knees lifting him slightly. He cooperated as Xavier pushed him back and got out from beneath him, though he felt his heart sinking as it happened. He settled down on his knees, his hands balled into nervous fists on his thighs, and he watched the boy silently, doing his best to keep the panic he felt off his face and just give Xavier a second for whatever it was he was clearly trying to process. Fear certainly gripped at Evan's chest that he'd done something wrong - had that pinch really been too sharp? Maybe he should be gentler with Xavier? Had anything gone wrong before then? - but he tried not to jump to any conclusions before Xavier spoke.

He nodded carefully when Xavier explained that he did want to do more, just not now. It was still hard to just accept that without spiralling into questions of whether he'd done something wrong to trigger Xavier wanting to end things for the time being, though he supposed, in an odd way, bringing in the goddess did help cut that off. He wanted to be good-natured about that, especially seeing Xavier grin, but Evan couldn't muster anything other than a glare to the side, his fists balling a bit more tightly.

"Yeah," he grumbled, partly just to bide time while he decided how to reply. He was still pissed with the goddess for possessing Xavier, and couldn't exactly say he was looking forward to seeing her right now. With a sigh, Evan managed to soften his expression, and pull it back to Xavier.

"I really am sorry she-- ...y'know." Somehow, saying the word possessed out loud felt... uncomfortable? Evan blinked a bit sheepishly to the side again, and brought one of his hands up to rub at his neck. He let that thought hang in the air for a moment while he tried to find something more pleasant to say.

The sight of Evan nervous and sheepish almost broke Xavier's resolve. This all felt silly and unnecessary to some degree, this separation, but Xavier really, really didn't want to regret whatever he would do with Evan. He wanted to relish in it, and stopping now seemed like it would give them both the best chance to make sure that happened.

As Evan struggled through his awkward apology about something that wasn't even really his fault--but wait, what if it was? What if the goddess was just jealous that Evan was interacting with Xavier and Evan actually did bring this on? That seemed incredibly likely. The goddess certainly hadn't attacked anyone else in the middle of the afternoon. But, even if that were the case, Evan couldn't have anticipated her actions at all.

Well, regardless, Xavier wanted to launch himself back into Evan's arms and kiss him vigorously to reassure him that no damage had been done. Yet, doing that would probably lead to more, and Xavier was not sure he had the capacity to push Evan away a second time.

Instead, Xavier settled for a wide grin and said, "I mean, hey, it got me to finally pounce you, so 'upshots.' " Xavier threw in a wink for good measure, and Xavier hoped that none of his other body language--his practically trembling legs, his still-erect cock, his ridiculously aching chest--would register on Evan's radar. Because, in all reality, one more touch from Evan would probably be all it took to... Gods, he couldn't even imagine it without a pleasurable shiver moving through his whole body.

Heh, that did get Evan to grin, and he quietly let his hand relax down to rest on his thigh again.

"Upshots," he echoed with a breathy almost-laugh, his eyebrows darting upwards just slightly as he did so, enjoying feeling like he and Xavier were in on a joke - and appreciating the added layer of reassurance that came with that. Xavier really did seem to be in good spirits, and Evan was more able to really believe that the boy just needed some time, not because anything had gone wrong, per se.

Even moreso, when a shiver moved through Xavier's body, putting forth yet another layer of reassurance that it wasn't even like Evan had ruined the mood or anything. Heh, in fact, maybe the trigger for needing to stop was precisely that Xavier had been on the verge of not being able to hold back... Uh, yeah, fuck it, yes, that was definitely the narrative Evan was going to choose to run with, at least until the next time self-doubt caught back up with him.

With a subtle victorious grin, Evan slowly pushed himself to his feet and moved over to where his pants had ended up. He just so happened to position himself with his backside facing Xavier as he started donning them again-- slowly, his muscles tensing in some rather gloriously visible ways as he did so. He was absolutely aware he had an audience for this, and he was relishing it. Some part of him lamented not facing Xavier so he could take in the boy's expressions, but he had done it on purpose; he figured Xavier would be less likely to feel shy about looking this way, and besides, Evan was very confident that his backside was a nice view.

Xavier was grateful to see Evan's expression return to mostly normal. He really did want to preserve whatever incredible potency they had going just moments before. Mmmmmm... Xavier's brain was already selecting his favorite parts to remember, scanning through what had happened to find and freeze each one for recall later. The way they had each pinned the other down, the terrifying feeling of being forced to reach into Evan's pants, the slow torture of undoing each of Xavier's buttons. Xavier shivered again, but this time, Evan was facing away from Xavier as he put his pants back on.

At first, Xavier felt like he should turn his head away--that was how he had offered his captain decency before in situations that weren't, uh, this--but then out of the corner of his eye, he swore he saw Evan's flex a little. Surely Evan hadn't looked this attractive pulling on pants before or after any of their training sessions. Had Xavier seen Evan put pants on before? Surely he would remember if he had, but maybe he had been looking away, too afraid to admit even to himself that he wanted Evan to...

Yeah, Evan was definitely doing that on purpose. Xavier could practically feel Evan's smug face from where he was kneeling. Nonetheless, it was successfully making almost every part of Xavier scream out for Evan's skin. He closed his eyes, letting an intense wave of desire flow through his shoulders, into his stomach, and down through the bulge in his pants. In the process of experiencing this, he moaned lightly, and one corner of his mouth slouched a little hungrily. He wanted his fingers to greedily traverse the planes of Evan's back, his hipbones, his... his...

Xavier's mind suddenly refused to translate his thoughts to words. Without thinking, Xavier moved closer, still remaining on his knees, to Evan, reaching out toward Evan's leg once again. But then he pulled his hand back. What use was all that work in retracting from Evan if Xavier reneged on it now?

But wait, what was the real dilemma here? Evan was Xavier's captain. Okay, whatever. Xavier deserved to be happy. Check. Xavier liked Evan. He didn't just want a fling. But, if Xavier could only do this with Evan one time, wouldn't he still jump at the chance? Could he really go his entire life wondering what having Evan inside actually felt like? Xavier shuddered, knowing wholeheartedly he couldn't. Okay, check. And then fear about Dehaljadrun, he supposed, but there again, what was life without adventure? Besides, it seemed like, with the charm off, she was relatively harmless for the time being. Xavier supposed she could "summon" Evan at any time, whatever that would look like, and... and... Xavier imagined being inches away from penetration before Evan was cruelly wrenched away like he was during the negotiation with no guarantee for Xavier that Evan was still intact. No way. Nooooooo way. Better to wait and let them figure out how the goddess would come to collect Evan each night before Xavier got himself that deeply into something. Fine then. Xavier really was going to watch this gorgeous, incredible, ridiculous man walk out of his tent unsatisfied. Good gods, what had they gotten themselves into?

Mmm, the sound of Xavier moaning behind him sent warm, satisfying tingles dancing down from Evan's head through his chest and into his gut. Not that he hadn't called how Xavier would react, but the gratification of being right was potent.

The captain turned around as he finished doing up the last of the buttons on his pants, and was facing Xavier as he re-did his belt, well aware that his pose would put the bulge in his pants pretty directly in front of Xavier's gaze.

Some part of him worried he was being mean - if the reason Xavier had stopped really was because he was on the edge of losing control, was this sort of visual teasing cruel? Or, he also worried it might come off as ill-spirited, like he was trying to make Xavier rethink his boundary. That wasn't Evan's intention at all, and he decided to chill a bit once his buckle was fastened.

He grabbed his boots much more non-chalantly, and sat down on Xavier's cot to do them up, his body language shifting away from smug posing and settling into more purely comfortable/practical motions. Not that tying up boots was the easiest thing to do sexily anyway-- though, of course, that did bring to mind undoing his boot with the goddess the other night, between Xavier's legs, right by the boy's crotch. A fresh shade of blush settled on his face, and he sped up his motions just a bit.

Once he was done, he flashed the boy a warm, if slightly nervous, smile. Truth was, he'd checked all the things off his list today, and wasn't totally sure what he wanted to do next, especially with the uncertainty about the goddess' plans hanging in the air. He could be more responsible and go check in with Seth, or maybe organize some drilling with the unit as a whole to keep up appearances. But then again, if the goddess collected him while doing something that visible...and both of those options sounded kind of exhausting, anyway.

Well, setting aside the question of what he should do next, he supposed he should at least tell Xavier one or two other things about his talk with Mizu regardless. His body language changed just subtly, back to being a little more guarded and kind of business-like. Not that he was ever terribly formal with his troops, but it was probably at least a bit palpable, that he was switching back into captain mode.

"Something else from my talk with Mizu today: We decided we'd let people know that a soldier came back from an attack, as it'd probably boost morale. I think Elaine's leading the charge on getting the word out, but you're fine to talk about it as well. Also, if anyone starts worrying about me, it's probably fine to say that I'm working on the current situation."

Uh, that part was pure conjecture, Evan realized, but he felt pretty confident that would be the right thing to do, especially since he wasn't finding it in himself to keep up appearances right now. Eventually his troops might start noticing that he was sleeping through the day and being more inaccessible than usual, and he didn't want that to tank morale despite Trevor's recovery. And, well, it did seem likely enough that Xavier would get the brunt of it if/when anyone did start worrying about Evan, and he didn't want the boy to be too put on the spot about it.

"For now we're keeping the goddess strictly under wraps, though. Maybe that'll change if I can get a few more things out of the goddess tonight, but until then, official line is we're still investigating the situation."

A part of Evan kind of hated going back into business mode with Xavier like this, but it was important that they were able to. After all, that would be the argument against getting involved, wouldn't it? That it'd impede their ability to function as captain and lieutenant? So, really, being able to do this was an important part of getting involved with each other, right? Evan did his best to mentally reassure himself that this would in fact enable rather than stifle future pantsless (and other sorts of) interactions with Xavier, and calmly just paused things there for a minute to get a read on how the lieutenant seemed to be reacting to the headspace switch.

Xavier was pleased that he had decided to pull his hand back before Evan fully turned around as Evan's new pose would surely have given Xavier exactly the push he needed to pull Evan down onto the floor again. It was so obvious that Evan was aroused and still flaunting it. Ugghhhhh. Of course Evan was going to be this intolerable. And Xavier loved every second of it despite the ways it only inflamed his own ache.

But then it seemed like Evan relented when he started to tie up his boots. And in fact, as the laces inched up, Xavier wondered if Evan's mood was changing. He seemed rougher with his boots, and Xavier worried that something had Evan frustrated. Was he thinking again about the way the goddess had come through? Was he frustrated at Xavier for having stopped the encounter?

Xavier stood while Evan was still tying his boot and blushed as he realized he was still in his underwear. Well, nothing to do about it now, so Xavier readjusted and pulled his legs up as though to hide his nakedness, not to mention...

And then Evan started talking about Mizu and Elaine. Xavier's mind had a very difficult time switching roles, and part of him wanted to laugh at how ridiculous it was that he was still so unclothed while they were talking about this. Certainly this was never how they had debriefed before. (Ha.)

After letting his mouth hang open slightly for a few moments, Xavier shook his head subtly and tried to clear his arousal. This did seem to lend itself to the idea that maybe Evan was frustrated. Or maybe Evan just wanted to put the whole thing past them? Xavier reminded himself, though, that Evan had said he wasn't capable of just doing this once... but what if that meant that Evan didn't want to do it at all? Why hadn't Xavier thought about that before? But, no, no, Xavier was the one who had had to keep Evan from going further, right? That's what Evan had wanted, right?

Xavier pushed all that momentarily to the side as he tried to process what Evan was actually saying. Tell people a soldier came back and that Evan's involved. But nothing about the goddess. Whew, that secret was still going to be tough, but Xavier recognized that this was important. He took Mizu's direct orders very seriously, and he felt honored to be trusted with sensitive information. Evan had chosen to take Xavier to the negotiation, after all.

And then there was a strange pang in Xavier's chest as he thought about Evan going to see the goddess again tonight. He was, yes, a little afraid for Evan, and yes, there was also a pang of jealousy, but Xavier pushed that down with this, that, and the other thing. At least his arousal was getting easier to manage.

In an attempt to add something meaningful to the conversation, Xavier scrambled to say "What's your plan for getting more from the goddess?" with a tone and expression that was close enough to his typical lieutenant behavior--yes, focus on strategy, Xavier--and then immediately wanted to smack his hand against head. That wasn't a question he really wanted answered, was it? Or was it? Ughhhh.

For a moment, Evan definitely started to worry that transitioning to business mode had been the wrong call - after all, Xavier looked a little dazed... sitting in front of Evan... still in his underwear. Gah. Just when the captain was starting to mentally panic and contemplate how to switch back - or, to whatever they needed to switch into, fuck - Xavier spoke up, in a way that was clearly aiming at following Evan's lead. So... should he carry on like normal?

Well, before his brain really contemplated that question, it finished parsing the content of Xavier's reply, and the captain couldn't help turning up a smug grin.

"Well, all it took to get an extra soldier was a well-executed strip-tease and my usual audacity. I'm sure I'll come up with something."

Xavier wasn't sure exactly what he was expecting from Evan's reply, but the casual way that Evan spoke candidly about what he had done with the goddess made Xavier laugh. He reached up and ran a hand through his tousled hair to regain composure. Somewhat.

"You never seem to have a shortage of ideas on that front. And gods know they would work on me." Xavier grinned again then, unable to stop himself as he thought fondly at the ways Evan had improvised their battle strategies in the moment to secure crucial moments of victory. He was grateful that the stiffness of their captain-lieutenant interaction had faded back into the friendly manner they had always used before, granted not usually with such spicy content. But... still, maybe this really wouldn't change much of anything between them, which in its own right made Xavier's stomach do a somersault.

Evan gave a soft, brief, breathy chuckle, and tossed Xavier a subtle wink.

He kind of floundered for a follow-up, though, as his brain couldn't decide on a goddamn direction. Some part of him was promptly freaking out that he was edging back into territory Xavier would be uncomfortable with again, while another part of him just felt smug as shit about how hot he knew he was being, and yet another part of him was already moving on and back to the question of wondering what he should do next. Try to get some more sleep? He doubted he'd be very successful. Heh, wank so he didn't show up to the goddess quite this fucking horny? Ugh, she'd probably manage to snag him right in the middle of it though.

Honestly... he kinda just wanted to stay with Xavier. But, doing what? Other than, y'know, the things Xavier had just put a stop to... Evan let out a soft sigh, and brought his hand up to rub at his hair a bit, his smugness by now pretty well dissipated.

It wasn't like he and Xavier hadn't stolen downtime just shooting the shit plenty of times before, but now there was this... pressure. Maybe there shouldn't be? Fuck, Evan wished he could just magically come up with some completely inane yet entertaining topic they could just dive into, remind each other that they had plenty of comfortable rapport to fall back on.

"Anyway," he spoke up, trying to shrug off the awkwardness he felt. Unfortunately, it didn't really work, and a vaguely awkward pause hung before he continued, though he kept on a smile, hopeful that the awkwardness would at least feel... warm?

"Uh, I... suppose I should probably go?"

Evan's tone of voice really was posing a question, and he certainly wasn't making any movements to get up off of the cot. He looked hopeful, although even he wasn't totally sure what exactly it was he was hoping for.

Evan's wink reignited all the arousal and excitement in Xavier's body and had the sum total effect of making Xavier bubble up with mirth and laugh. If Xavier thought there was no shortage of fun hanging around with Evan before this... Oh boy. Before he was finished laughing, however, Xavier shuffled up closer to where Evan was on the cot such that it was comfortable for the boy to throw an arm over Evan's knee. It appeared casual, yet Xavier knew exactly what he was doing. Two could play at the sexual tension game, surely, and with Evan's clothes back on, Xavier felt relatively secure that they weren't going to slip back into things.

His other hand found his hair again and tossed it to the side a little more dramatically than usual as Xavier gave Evan a sideways glance.

"Yeah, s'pose you should. Captain stuff to attend to and all that." Xavier grinned at Evan then. He wanted to leave it at that because, surely, after joking around, they had confirmed that things between them would be okay after this, right? But there were still lingering doubts in his mind. Yeah, may as well cut to it.

"Just, ya know, don't forget about me just because some goddess comes calling." Though the words Xavier was saying were intended to be lighthearted and humorous in nature, it was fairly obvious he was fishing for reassurance.
